Humidity
A piano’s wooden soundboard is designed to have a crown or an arch. The crown increases or decreases according to changes in humidity and will change the tension on the strings and throwing your piano out of tune.

We want to try to avoid larger fluctuations in humidity which can have an adverse effect on the pianos regulation, and even cause some parts to crack. If humidity changes are extreme, the soundboard can wrap so much that it may collapse and lost its crown which may require rebuilding or replacement of the instrument.

A repetitive dry / humid environment can cause wood joints to weaken, if you really want the ultimate protection, place your piano in a humidity controlled environment which will protect your piano in swings of humidity,

Piano reverberations can also cause problems with your piano so ensure that you leave a couple of feet between it and any walls. You don’t want this excess reverberation causing unnecessary damage to your instrument.

Excessive Sunlight
Too much sunlight can destroy the piano’s finish in addition to causing all sorts of other issues with your piano.

Avoid placing your piano away from windows, open doors, air vents, heaters and direct sunlight. Place your instrument in a room away from your kitchen or furnace. All of these can cause sudden changes in humidity. However, even with these necessary precautions, changes in weather can affect indoor humidity as well.

Depending on where you live and where your piano is located, you will know very well that some areas are much more prone to humidity while other’s are not. Placing any sort of humidifying or dehumidifying machine near your piano isn’t a solution and may actually cause much more harm than good.

An apparent good solution is the use of an in-piano humidity control system and the humidifier. It’s an easy-to-maintain, non-demanding and relatively inexpensive combination system that apparently has helped.

Find a good, reliable piano tuner to ensure that your piano runs smoothly and sounds its best. Piano Tuners can often hear things besides frequencies of the notes. He or she can tell when something doesn’t right.

On average, a piano should be tuned a couple of times per year. If this is overlooked, most maintenance will also be overlooked as well. Have your instrument tuned once during the mid-summers months and once in the mid-autumn months. This will coincides with the first drastic temperature/climate changes after the heat or air conditioner has been turned on for a while.

Keeping it Clean
Although not quite as cuddly and cute as a puppy, it will make for better music if you maintain your instrument, both inside and out.

Use a polish designed especially for use on delicate furniture. Cheap polish furniture won’t cut it, so invest in some good polish for best results. Also, keep in mind that spray-on polish can cause residue build up where you don’t want it.

Whatever you do, don’t use your piano to hold your plants. Don’t place any drinks or another items on top of your piano. Keep the finish as clean and object free as possible.

Some finishes, such as polymer, will not require waxing. If this is the case, just use a clean, lint-free cloth to remove dust and light finger smudges. If you have used a polish on this kind of finish, simply dilute a mild detergent and some water and use a damp cloth to remove the old wax. Then run over a dry cloth to remove any streaks immediately after wiping with a damp cloth.

Piano Keys
Finger oils will always rub off onto your piano keys, so it’s a good idea to wipe them clean from time to time using care. We also suggest dusting keys once in a while, but in most cases, it’s best to ask your technician to clean this area during maintenance.
